Inner Zeal Reggae-Robics is one of our newest Culcha Spot featured businesses. We had an opportunity to ask founder, Zela Africa a few questions about the inspiration behind Inner Zeal Reggae-Robics and why she is so passionate about the work that she does. Zela Africa possesses a positive outlook that shines brightly through her work and content.

What inspired you to have a career in fitness?

My career as a Dance Teacher and Choreographer spans 20 years this year, 2022. I had a love for sports and fitness from the age of 7. I auditioned for a place on the elite gymnastic squad in London, U.K. This included a rigorous circuit training program with all the fitness exercises to strengthen our core and body conditioning exercises to improve flexibility and coordination. I never forgot how strong I became. I competed regionally for my district and gave powerful executions on all the apparatus, winning many medals for my team.

Fast forward to when I moved to Ethiopia in 2009, taking up a job offer as a Dance and P.E. Teacher in one of Addis Ababa’s finest International Schools; it was compulsory for the sports teacher to sign up for the 10km race. Taking part in this race required no training, but I have developed a love for running races since then.

How long have you been training?

I have been training all my life. From as early as I could remember, I trained throughout my childhood years as a gymnast and trained in dance from age 5 in ballet and Contemporary Caribbean dance at Jamaica’s Edna Manley School of Performing Arts. At age 13, I played Volleyball on the England Cadet squad, which became too demanding for me to be in two different sports competing at a high level, so I quit the volleyball team and focused on my passion for dancing and gymnastics.

What are your personal fitness goals?

To maintain and improve my full body strength and flexibility.

What is Reggae-Robics?

The creation of Dance moves from Africa and the Caribbean merged with aerobics steps and fitness routines using authentic reggae music.

What types of fitness classes do you teach?

I specialize in teaching Reggae-Robics dance fitness. I teach aerobics to reggae and afrobeat music. I teach a ballet-style fitness class which is great for sculpting the entire body and improving your balance and coordination—recommended for people recovering from an injury who want something gentle yet effective and may not be able to jump.

I teach medium to high-impact HIIT sessions with combinations of jumps, using your body weight and exercise routines to strengthen the entire body.
