This month we celebrate the Earthlight (birth) of Empress Menen, wife and companion to H.I.M. Emperor Haile Selassie I, and the only queen in Ethiopian history to be crowned on the same day as her King. Empress Menen was not only a queen, she dedicated her life to community service, education, and the rights of women. It was Emperor Selassie I who stated "her character is such that, apart from goodness, there is no evil or malice in her. In a time when the Black family structure is constantly compromised by violence, racism, the prison industrial complex, drugs, and poor education, we should look to the strength of women who paved the way for us, listen to their words, respect their actions, and mimic their fearlessness.
