If there is one woman who remains in the hearts of African music purists worldwide, it is Miriam Makeba. If you know nothing about African music she is a go-to artist. Nicknamed "Mama Africa", Makeba paved the way for generations of female (and male) artists of the Diaspora. Her warm smile, vibrant voice, and unmeasurable talent is a timeless treasure. As a South African anti-apartheid pioneer, and wife to "Black Power" leader Kwame Ture (fka. Stokley Carmichael), Miriam Makeba's story is an astounding example of grace. I was recently able to watch "Mama Africa", a biographical documentary on her life. Her journey as an artist was definitely eyeopening. To witness to
her humble and gracious presence through film was an encouraging reminder that true militancy does not come from the brawn, but from the heart.
